Torkin Manes has appointed partner Roland Hung chair of the firm’s privacy, data, and cybersecurity group and co-chair of its new artificial intelligence and innovation group.
Hung has guided organizations on matters involving privacy compliance, cybersecurity, data governance, breach response, and technology. He has worked with financial institutions, manufacturing, pharmaceutical companies, information technology providers, municipalities, educational and medical institutions, and not-for-profit organizations.
He has assisted with meeting the complex legal and privacy compliance requirements of new products and technologies within Canada and other jurisdictions. He has handled issues related to AI, social media, surveillance, identification and authentication measures (such as biometrics and electronic signatures), vehicle and device telematics, drones, online behavioural advertising, big data and data analytics, and data monetization.
Hung has tackled matters involving privacy requests, complaints, cross-border transactions, privacy audits, breach notification and court actions for damages. He has also litigated intellectual property disputes, including trademark infringement issues.
He has appeared before administrative boards, privacy regulators, provincial and federal courts, and mediators, including those before the Federal Court. He chairs the Ontario Bar Association’s privacy and access to information law section and sits on the Canadian advisory board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
Hung brings in-house experience from his time as a senior legal counsel and global privacy officer at Finning. Moreover, he was chief legal officer and chief privacy officer at Vivametrica, where he was on the board according to LinkedIn.
He is ranked as a recommended lawyer in Lexpert’s data privacy and cybersecurity category. He was part of the 2026 Lexpert Special Edition on Canada’s Leading Technology Lawyers.
In addition to English, Hung is fluent in Cantonese.
Hung will work with Lisa R. Lifshitz, who launched Torkin Manes’ privacy, data, and cybersecurity group. Lifshitz will co-chair the AI and innovation group alongside Hung in addition to chairing the technology group.
The AI and innovation group’s rollout was announced on August 31. The group consists of lawyers with expertise in technology, privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property, corporate/commercial, employment, litigation, and regulatory matters.
Sondra Rebenchuk was also named the first-ever director of AI and innovation at the firm. Rebenchuk is responsible for incorporating AI and emerging technologies into Torkin Manes’ operations.
