Whitelaw Twining’s new partners are experts in complex, cross-border insurance disputes
Clyde & Co partners John Nicholl and Heather Gray have taken their expertise in complex, cross-border insurance disputes to Whitelaw Twining in Toronto.
Nicholl is dual-qualified to practise in both Ontario and Québec. For over 40 years, he has tackled litigation, arbitration, and high-stakes insurance coverage matters.
He has worked on matters across Canada, the US, and Europe, particularly in the London insurance market. He concentrates on disputes related to business interruption, product liability, class actions, and political risk.
Initially, Nicholl’s practice focused on insurance defence litigation, but he has since shifted to coverage advice, litigation, and arbitration for insurer and reinsurer clients in Canada. He has also taken on disputes involving property, EBI, course-of-construction, product recall, trade credit, political risk, general liability (GL), errors and omissions (E&O), directors’ and officers’ liability (D&O) and reinsurance.
The Barreau du Québec named him Advocatus Emeritus in 2012.
Nicholl is a Lexpert-ranked lawyer in the categories of Litigation – Directors’ & Officers’ Liability, Litigation – Commercial Insurance, and Professional Liability. The bilingual lawyer, who is fluent in English and French, will maintain his Montréal practice despite being based in Toronto.
Gray has served as coverage counsel to domestic and London-based insurers. She has handled financial lines, E&O, D&O, and commercial GL issues.
For over 20 years she has acted for clients in litigation, arbitration, and mediation. She has provided regulatory advice on licensing, market conduct, and product development matters.
Gray is also Lexpert-ranked in the category of Litigation – Commercial Insurance. She has provided strategic, non-contentious advice on policy wording and interpretation.
She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004.
“The addition of John and Heather significantly strengthens our national insurance practice and our ability to serve clients internationally with deep regional knowledge and industry-leading expertise,” said Danny Shugarman, Whitelaw Twining’s country managing partner, in a statement.
