The universities inked a memorandum of understanding last month
Western University and the University of Bristol have inked a partnership whereby UK law graduates can obtain juris doctors in Canada.
The memorandum of understanding was signed last month. The program focuses on Bristol law graduates with bachelor of law degrees who are looking to pursue their JDs.
University of Bristol law graduates typically obtain LLBs after three years; participants in the new program will have advanced standing that will enable them to obtain a degree in Canada within two years. Those who finish the JD at Western University may apply for bar admission in Canada’s provinces without having to undergo the National Committee on Accreditation assessment process for foreign-trained lawyers; they will also be qualified for job opportunities in Canada’s legal profession.
Western Law dean Mohamed Khimji announced the program while visiting the University of Bristol Law School. The program is expected to accommodate a maximum to 20-30 students annually over time.
“This is a fantastic new partnership between two strong law schools. We are creating a direct pathway for Bristol graduates to join Western’s Faculty of Law and build their careers in North America,” Khimji said in a statement. “There is significant interest from students who have completed their law degrees in the U.K. and want to pursue opportunities in Canada, and we look forward to welcoming Bristol’s strongest graduates to our campus.”
University of Bristol Law School head Catherine Kellt added that the partnership created “a unique, globally oriented opportunity.”
“It creates a truly global pathway, enabling our graduates to enhance their legal education while opening doors to opportunities across North America and beyond,” Kelly said.
The program has opened up applications for the 2026-2027 academic year.
The University of Bristol is located in southwest England and is among the UK’s top 10 law schools.
