Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP is certified under a diversity standard called Mansfield Rule 2.0., the firm announced on Sept. 3.

The certification confirms that at least 30 per cent women, LGBTQ+ and minority lawyers were considered for 70 per cent or more of significant leadership roles at the firm, Fasken said. Participating firms were tracked from July 2018 to July 2019.

The Mansfield Rule 2.0 is an expansion of the original version, and now includes LGBTQ+ lawyers. It also measures consideration for participation in client pitch meetings and requests that participating law firms make appointment and election processes transparent to all lawyers in their firms, Fasken said.

“Mansfield Rule Certification recognizes our continued efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in our roles, committees and leadership activities,” said Katherine Pollock, chairwoman of Fasken’s diversity and inclusion committee.

In 2018, Fasken received its first Mansfield certification, and according to the firm, it was part of the original 30 pilot law firms to commit to the project, and the only one largely based in Canada. The rule, which originated from a 2016 Women in Law Hackathon, is named after Arabella Mansfield, who was the first American woman admitted into the legal profession in 1869.

“As the Mansfield Rule evolves, so does law firm leadership, and Fasken is proud to be part of this positive change. In this regard, the firm has signed up for Mansfield 3.0, which adds lawyers with disabilities to the process,” Pollock said.
