Miller Thomson lures Faruk Gafic from Aird & Berlis

Miller Thomson has announced the appointment of Aird & Berlis’ Faruk Gafic as a partner in its real estate transactions and leasing group.

Gafic joined Miller Thomson’s Toronto office yesterday October 1. He has been guiding landlords and tenants in the office, industrial, and retail sectors for almost two decades.

He concentrates on commercial leasing issues and has drafted and negotiated leases and offers to lease. He has also amended agreements involving expansions, relocations, partial surrenders, terminations, and licence arrangements.

Gafic has helped bring leasing transactions with complex arrangements and high-volume portfolios to completion. He has tackled all aspects of commercial and residential real estate transactions including acquisitions, dispositions, and financings.

He has also worked on matters involving corporate and commercial law, particularly mergers and acquisitions, sales, financings, and commercial agreements. Per LinkedIn, he spent over 10 years at Aird & Berlis before jumping to Miller Thomson; he started as a lawyer with Aird & Berlis in May 2015 and made partner there in January 2017.

Gafic also logged seven years with McLean & Kerr LLP, where he was a lawyer from June 2008 to May 2015.

Jay Hoffman, chair of Miller Thomson’s national business law group, highlighted Gafic’s commercial leasing experience as being vital to the firm in helping clients navigate complex and evolving real estate markets.

Gafic earned his LLB at Western University in 2006 and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 2008. He also holds a bachelor of science degree in psychology from York University.

Last month, Miller Thomson beefed up its corporate, M&A, and securities group with the return of Abid Ahmed to the firm as a partner in Toronto. In June, Ciaron Czajkowski also joined the firm’s real estate transactions and leasing group as a partner in Toronto; she is among the real estate experts with whom Gafic will work.
