Tribunals Ontario launches new case management system to streamline dispute resolution process

The Tribunals Ontario has launched a new case management system to streamline the resolution of disputes pending before adjudicative tribunals across the province.

The new system, called the “Tribunals Ontario Portal,” seeks to streamline the dispute resolution process by allowing applications to be filed, processed and scheduled online. The new system is part of the provincial government’s Justice Accelerated Strategy, which aims to break down barriers in the justice system and speed up access to services.

“The Tribunals Ontario Portal will make it easier and faster for people to file applications, access mediation, view their case file and upload and exchange documents with other parties,” said Tribunals Ontario executive chair Sean Weir. “This new system will modernize our operations and support our efforts to improve access to justice for all those who come before our tribunals.”

According to Tribunals Ontario, the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) is the first tribunal to implement the new system, where landlords and tenants can submit paperless L1, L2, T2 and T6 applications and utilize dispute resolution tools to communicate with other parties or ask for assistance from an LTB dispute resolution officer in reaching an agreement.

“The Landlord and Tenant Board is committed to embracing technology to make it more convenient for those who use our services. That said, access to justice is a priority for the LTB, and we will continue to provide other options to those who lack access to a computer,” said LTB associate chair Karen Restoule.

The Tribunals Ontario also said that the new system would be expanded to more tribunals, boards and commissions over the next three years to standardize case management and reporting and guarantee consistent user experience for all those accessing its services.
