Aird & Berlis, Heuristica, Torkin Manes announced new appointments
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which Canadian Lawyer sums up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
Aird & Berlis LLP
The Toronto-based firm appointed John Munnis and Andrea Kroetch as new partners.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome John and Andrea to the firm,” said the firm in its news release.
Munnis is a member of the firm’s financial services, capital markets, and mergers and acquisitions groups. He negotiates and structures corporate transactions, including public and private securities offerings, acquisitions, reorganizations, and joint ventures.
In the area of corporate and commercial lending, he focuses on domestic and cross-border asset-based, syndicated, secured, mezzanine, and subordinated debt. He also helps clients with securities regulatory reporting and compliance.
Meanwhile, Kroetch belongs to the firm’s intellectual property and litigation and dispute resolution groups. Her intellectual property practice covers technology transactions, copyright law, and all aspects of trademark law, including clearance, prosecution, opposition, and enforcement.
She assists with navigating intellectual property issues relating to acquisitions, licensing, and commercialization. She also guides clients in connection with marketing and advertising laws and with federal and provincial privacy law and data protection issues.
Heuristica Discovery Counsel LLP
The firm welcomed Kelly Friedman to its partnership. She now acts as its chief legal data intelligence officer and senior counsel.

Friedman is a litigator who is experienced with electronic information matters, including e-discovery, privacy, and data breach issues. In 2011, Canadian Lawyer recognized Friedman as one of its Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers for her work on e-discovery.
She is also well-versed with commercial litigation and regulatory law.
Torkin Manes LLP
The Toronto-based firm added Niklas Holmberg as a partner in its litigation and dispute resolution group and Jennifer Lynch as a partner in its private client services group.
Holmberg handles complex litigation in all areas of commercial and civil disputes. He has dealt with shareholder oppression actions, corporate governance disputes, defamation claims, contractual disputes, and professional negligence claims.
He also tackles matters relating to fraud and the misrepresentation and misappropriation of confidential information. He is also experienced with obtaining urgent injunctive relief, including freezing and disclosure orders.
“We are delighted to have Niklas join our team, and will benefit from his knowledge and experience as we continue to uphold our proven track record,” said Anthony Scane, who chairs the litigation and dispute resolution group, in the firm’s news release.
On the other hand, Lynch’s practice involves all areas of estate planning, estate administration, and trust law. She guides executors and trustees through the stages of estate and trust administration, including probate applications, estate and trust accounting, and distributions.
Her clientele includes business owners, professionals, high-net-worth individuals, and families with complex arrangements. She assists clients with multijurisdictional succession issues and with the preparation of sophisticated wills, powers of attorney, family trusts, and Henson trusts.
