She has sat on the Ontario Court of Justice bench since 2017
Marlyse Dumel has been appointed regional senior justice of the Ontario Court of Justice in the East Region.
She steps into the role on September 25. As regional senior justice, she will exercise the powers and perform the duties of the chief justice in the East Region under the supervision of the chief justice. Among her responsibilities are scheduling court proceedings and assigning cases to judges.
Dumel has been with the court since March 2017, sitting in Ottawa. She served as the local administrative judge from 2022 to 2026.
She presently sits on the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee and has been the East Region representative for the Association of Ontario Judges. She was also on the Justices of the Peace Review Council.
Dumel spent 13 years with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, where she prosecuted criminal matters. She also advised and trained prosecutors and police services on legal matters.
She was National Prosecution Policy Committee secretary and sat on the Employment Equity and Diversity Committee. She is part of the International Association of Women Judges.
Dumel has co-chaired the Ottawa’s Futures in Justice program since 2023. She has spoken at Black History Month events, the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario, and the federal justice department.
She was called to the bar in 2002.
Dumel’s appointment as regional senior justice was announced by Ontario attorney general Doug Downey on Tuesday July 21. The Ontario Bar Association applauded the announcement in a LinkedIn post.
Last year, Anthony Frederick Leitch was named regional senior justice in the Central West Region. Earlier this month, Christina Louise Logue became regional senior justice of the peace to the East Region; moreover, 27 new justices of the peace commenced at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 8. They were assigned to Toronto, Orangeville, Brampton, Oshawa, Brantford, Sioux Lookout, Hamilton, Kitchener, Cornwall, London, and Belleville.
In March, Howard Leibovich was named regional senior judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario for the Central East Region. Patrick J. Boucher was announced as the new chief justice of this court, succeeding Geoffrey B. Morawetz.
