Public and regulatory law expert Awanish Sinha has been named regional managing partner, Ontario at McCarthy Tétrault.

He succeeds Caroline Zayid, who had led the office since January 2024. The firm said Sinha takes the helm “at a time of increasing complexity across markets” as its clients navigate dynamic and  volatile conditions.

“I’m honoured to have my partners’ trust at this critical moment of accelerated change. For 172 years, McCarthy Tétrault has helped clients navigate market disruptions and novel legal issues to make hard decisions in real time while managing risk and identifying opportunities,” Sinha said in a statement. “I am excited to serve in that tradition and work side by side with our clients for their consistent success in an environment of increasingly kaleidoscopic risk.”

The Lexpert-ranked lawyer has worked on matters involving public sector integrity law, lobbying law, elections law, novel legal and policy regimes, situational legal strategy on moral hazard, public discourse, and black swan events. He has also facilitated atypical, discretionary situations.

He has co-led the firm’s public sector strategy group, and his clients have included Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. In 2022, he told Canadian Lawyer that he was aiming to “push a new frontier of law, a different way of looking at problem-solving in the legal world.”

In 2023, Canadian Lawyer included Sinha in its list of Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers. Lexpert ranked him as a leading lawyer in the “litigation – regulatory & public law” category.

“Awi brings creativity, strategy and energy to everything he does. I can’t think of anyone better to represent us in the Toronto market at this critical time.  As I return to litigation practice, I can’t wait to support Awi in this exciting next chapter,” Zayid said.

Zayid once spearheaded McCarthy Tétrault’s national litigation and disputes practice.
