McCarthy Tétrault lawyer named president of ITechLaw

Charles Morgan, partner at McCarthy Tétrault and co-leader of its national Information Technology Law Group, has been appointed as president of the International Technology Law Association (ITechLaw).

Morgan’s practice focuses on advising major clients on their most complex commercial transactions involving various technological issues such as IT outsourcing, systems integration, cloud, financial technologies, data security, data monetization, privacy, licensing, e-commerce and telecommunications.

Under Morgan’s new leadership, ITechLaw will publish a book, titled, Responsible AI: A Global Policy Framework, which contributes thought-leadership on artificial intelligence (AI), which is one of today’s most transformative technologies.

The book is authored by 54 technology legal experts, researchers and industry representatives from 16 countries. It establishes an important global policy framework for the responsible development, deployment and use of artificial intelligence, exploring eight core principles including: accountability, transparency and fairness.

According to the firm, the book is a call to action for stakeholders, including the general public, to actively participate in a dialogue regarding the component features of responsible AI.

“I am honoured to serve as President of ITechLaw and to be part of the remarkable and dedicated team of authors who contributed to this book,” said Morgan. “I look forward to participating in the ongoing dialogue about the ethical considerations that must remain central to the responsible development of AI systems.”

“Charles’s appointment, together with this publication, reflect McCarthy Tétrault’s strategic focus on providing unparalleled industry focused expertise and practical insights to our clients,” said Lara Nathans, industry strategy leader of McCarthy Tétrault. “AI is disrupting our clients’ businesses, creating new opportunities across industries and we are proud to be at the forefront of this transformation.”
