New president of The Advocates’ Society introduced

Scott Maidment of McMillan LLP was introduced as the new president of The Advocates’ Society at its annual end-of-term dinner, assuming the role from outgoing president Brian Gover of Stockwoods LLP.

The Advocates’ Society recently held its annual end-of-term dinner at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

More than 1,300 lawyers and guests attended the event, where Scott Maidment of McMillan LLP was introduced as the society’s new president, assuming the role from outgoing president Brian Gover of Stockwoods LLP. 

Other members of the society’s executive committee for 2019-2020 were also introduced, including vice president Guy Pratte of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, treasurer Deborah Palter of Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP and secretary Peter Kryworuk of Lerners LLP.

Among the guests at the dinner were more than 46 judges and masters from seven courts across Canada, including British Columbia Chief Justice Robert Bauman, Ontario Chief Justice George Strathy, New Brunswick Chief Justice J.C. Marc Richard, the Ontario Court of Justice’s Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve and Justice Sheilah Martin of the Supreme Court of Canada, who delivered the evening’s keynote address.

Michael Rosenberg of McCarthy Tétrault LLP took home the Arleen Goss Award for Young Advocates, which was presented by Maisonneuve and Malik Martin, chairman of the young advocates’ standing committee. Meanwhile, Michael Watson of Gowling WLG won the Excellence in Teaching Award for his contributions to the society’s education programs. The award was presented by Marie-Andrée Vermette, chairwoman of the 2018-2019 education committee, and Sandra Barton, chairwoman of the 2019-2020 education committee.
