Dave Leonard, a partner and chief executive officer at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, was recently named Senior Executive of the Year (Eastern Canada) by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion in its 2019 Awards of Success.

The award recognizes Leonard for his contributions and commitment to diversity and inclusion within his firm. Among Leonard’s achievements is spearheading the launch of McCarthy Tétrault’s “Inclusion Now” initiative — a progressive, four-year plan to ensure that diversity, inclusion and corporate social responsibility informs every aspect of how the firm does business.

Through Inclusion Now, the firm said, it aims to make a meaningful commitment to increasing the diversity of its workforce and to having a greater impact on the legal profession as a whole. It addresses inclusion by identifying and eliminating unconscious biases, creating programs and policies designed to set diverse lawyers up for success and creating spaces where everyone can bring their whole selves to the workplace.

“Leadership matters and Dave Leonard is a proven leader who has made diversity and inclusion a cornerstone of his mandate,” said Nikki Gershbain, chief inclusion officer at McCarthy Tétrault. “Dave understands that diversity and inclusion isn’t a box that gets checked, it is a philosophy that must underlie everything we do as a firm.
