Who are the top public-sector legal earners?

Who earned the most among lawyers working in Ontario’s public sector? Once again, you can find out from the Sunshine list detailing the names, salaries, and positions of thousands of public-sector employees who earn more than $100,000 per year.

The most recent list released last month covers salaries for 2011.

Ontario Court Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo’s salary for 2011 was $289,657.94.

As for provincial court judges, the majority of them earned $258,236.69. Case management masters typically took home $189,811.18, while many justices of the peace earned $118,867.64.

Law Times lists in this chart, in descending order by salary, the top earners from the Ministry of the Attorney General plus other legal professionals working as counsel, general counsel, and solicitors among various municipal and provincial bodies.

The list also covers the broader public sector, including universities and hospitals.

    Judges get a great plan, fully funded after 10 years. They get 130 sick days a year at 100 percent pay. They also get 40 days vacation upon appointment. They get $ 2500 tax free allowance and a 258,000 salary.
    In comparison Justices of the peace earn 118,000. Get 6 (six) paid sick days a year. 20 vacation days upon appointment, 900 tax allowance and a ordinary civil service pension plan as described above.

    While this list helpful it would be great to know the pensions these parties as are entitled to and when to better evaluate the real value of these salaries.

    The members of the Ontario Public Service (e.g. employees of the Ministry of the AG) generally are entitled to 2% of salary per year of employmenet up to 35 years, i.e. max of 70% of salary, plus continuation of health benefits (or some). The 2% is calculated on the average of the 5 best years. For this they pay about 8% of gross pay, matched by employer. Acc to 2012 provincial budget, if there are shortfalls in the plans, only the employees will be called on to make it up.

    Judges have a better plan. There must be public info somewhere. Don't know what the Crown corps offer.
