Karen Perron named as associate justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice

The Government of Ontario has announced the appointment of associate justice Karen Perron to the Superior Court of Justice.

Perron’s legal career began after being called to the Ontario bar in 2004. She initially worked as an associate in the litigation group at Merovitz Potechin in Ottawa. In 2011, she joined Borden Ladner Gervais, where she later became a partner in 2014, specializing in commercial litigation. Her practice encompasses banking litigation, bankruptcy and insolvency litigation, and directors’ and officers’ liability.

Before her appointment to the bench, Perron appeared before numerous courts in Ontario in a variety of commercial disputes, including the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal. She has also been counsel in complex commercial disputes before the Commercial List sittings in Toronto.

Beyond her professional achievements, Perron has been actively involved in the legal community. She served as the president of the Ontario Bar Association from 2021 to 2023 and has participated in various community volunteer initiatives, including the Law Society Foundation’s Lawyers Feed the Hungry program and the board of the Community Information Centre of Ottawa.

Her dedication to volunteerism earned her the Ontario Bar Association’s Linda Adlam Manning Award for Volunteerism in 2016. She has also been recognized for her corporate and commercial litigation expertise and was nominated for the Canadian Law Awards’ Female Trailblazer of the Year.

A Franco-Ontarian from Timmins, Perron is fluent in both English and French. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa.

Chief justice Geoffrey B. Morawetz has assigned associate justice Perron to Ottawa, where she fills the vacancy created by the appointment of former associate justice Alexandre Kaufman as a judge of the Superior Court of Justice. Perron’s term as an associate justice will begin on April 11.
